need help on how to train labrador to fetch?

i have just recently gotten a labrador retriever…. the vet told me he is around 1 yrs old…. he has never been trained before… does anyone have any good tips on how to train him to fetch something and bring it back to me? i would really appreciate it … thanks a lot!

Labs have a natural instinct to retrieve, hence the name of the breed. =) This would be easy and something the dog would grasp on to easily and quickly. Get a tug of war rope from the pet store, preferrably one with a tennis ball or 2 on the mid section. Get him playing that with you and once he is really going, throw the rope and when he goes to get it, chances are he will bring it back. If not, begin calling his name to bring it back. When he does, tell him to drop it once your hand is on it. For each step that he does, give hima treat and tell him good boy, good retrieve. Labs are very smart dogs, he should catch on quickly. With that said, not all labs are keen on giving it back so you may have to work with him on the drop it method. Just stay firm and he’ll get it.

anything would be helpful – teaching her to sit, stop chewing on anything and everything she wants to, toilet training tips etc.
I forgot to add my puppy is 8 weeks old, if that helps. Thanks for your answers.
Its more how to tell her that she’s been bad and how to stop her from chewing on shoes and furniture. I think I’ll manage to teach her things like how to sit ok.

My sister has a 5 month old lab and it still chews things but much less.

Replace the shoes with toys it is allowed to chew each time, distract the puppy from the furniture and make sure it has plenty of things to chew.. a kong filled with peanut butter is a favourite or a dental chew toy.
Always have a bag of small treats to hand, cut up ham and cheese in small quantites they love and reward good behaviour with a treat

im looking for trick training not obedience training

You want your dog to say prayers, targeting, ring bell, back up, crawl, tell secret, wipe your feet, roll over, play dead, where’s Fido,….
That kind of tricks? I have teached my dog some nice tricks with "Dog Tricks Vol. 2 (DVD)" You can find some DVDs on the site below. I think this is what you are looking for.

Labrador Puppy?

I have always had animals from rescue centres, but I would really like a Labrador puppy that I can train etc, I feel very guilty going to a breeder when I have always rescued animals, any ideas where I get a labrador puppy from who needs a good home – is there any labrador rescue centres – I live in East Yorkshire

Just keep checking back at shelters. Try lab rescues. If you decide to go for a pup, don’t feel gulity. As long as you get one from a quality breeder with references & shows their dogs till their championships. Good Luck.
