I am thinking of getting a labrador puppy but my mum isn’t too keen on me leaving it in the house all day.. I don’t like the idea of crate training and i don’t want to confuse it by leaving it in the house one day and throwing it in the garden the next.. what do i do? I have sooo many questions on this subject AAAHHH Help! I haven’t actually bought it yet but i wan to be ready when it comes..

My husband’s lab is 6 years old and was crate trained. It was hard for them at first because he worked all the time and would leave the dog in the crate. Ace (the dog) actually got some kind of stress disease and lost chunks of hair for awhile (as a puppy). Once he started a different job, where he had more time to play and train with the dog, he had done wonderful. He is actually his duck dog, and is so well trained. He does constantly stay in the house (we can be gone for 12 hours or more and he won’t have an accident) – He has actually learned not to drink water until we come home (sad, but smart). I’ve never seen a more better mannered or smarter dog. Like waiting until everyone has come into the house to go in, he knows which rooms he can and cannot go into in the house (like the kitchen and babies room he isn’t allowed in), knows hand signals, when you say heel, he walks to your right, without a leash (anywhere/anytime). I never liked labs, until I met my husbands. They are a lot of work though and takes a lot of time and discipline to train them to do these sort of things. He had a really good book, but I don’t know what it was called b/c he had lost it in a move. Good luck, you can do it!

She is 18 months well trained in other areas how ever she likes to jump the fence when we go out, any humain ways to train her?

Keep her in the house / crated when you can’t watch her or you leave the house.

ANY TIPS FOR A LABRADOR PUPPY??????

Hey guys,
Today i just got my yellow labrador puppy and he`s about 14 weeks old. He is a very nice guy and has never barked yet.He doesn`t bite, and gets along with anyone.

I need some tips on how to train him to walk by my side.
I need some tips on how to train him to no go into the kitchen.
I need some tips on how to train him not to chew things.
I need some tips on how to train him not to do his business in the house.

Thanks alot guys.

Well probably for a few months, you’re going to need to puppy proof your house, the same way you would child proof your house for a toddler. Put little gates around the kitchen, and pick up shoes, purses, books, anything that would be fun to chew up (everything at his age). And keep plenty of bones and other chew toys around for him to chew on. If you catch him in the act of chewing something, scold him. Just say no firmly, and repeat No a few times. Then give him something he is supposed to chew on and present it to him like you’re very happy about it.

For not doing his business, same thing. You’ll need to take him out atleast every 3 hours, if not more. He can probably only hold it for about 3 hours at this point. They say for each month a puppy is old, it’s a whole hour they can hold it. Yes, you’ll have to get up at night to let him out. If you catch him peeing just say no very firmly, and take him straight outside. That will let him know that on the carpet is bad, outside is good.

Ok, for him to walk by your side, you need to be patient, it might take some time for this but you will need to take him for daily walks. This is so that he will remember what you taught him. It might help you to get a chain collar, or you can wait a while until he’s a little more grown up. But take him for a walk, and only have about 3 feet of leverage for him on the leash. When he starts pulling ahead, pull the leash so that he will be by your side and if you need to, shorten the leash so he’ll be forced to be by yourside. When you do that, some people say "heal," but that’s kind of up to you whether you want to make a command out if it or not.

Ok congrats and good luck. I bet he is super cute!

Labrador training ( I give up)?

My husband and I just recently purchased a new home, and with the new home came a new puppy. This yellow lab is a male named Jackson. He is VERY intelligent and has learned sit, stay, lay, etc. He is almost 4 months old, and he refuses to eliminate outside. We have tried puppy pads (he rips them to shreds.) We have tried the bell on the door ( he ripped it off the wall.) We have tried rubbing his nose, shouting, spanking, nothing seems to work. He knows he is doing something wrong because he sneaks around and will only go a little until you yell at him, then he will run to the door to go out. It almost seems like the only way for him to let us know he has to go out is to eliminate on the floor a little. Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated because I really don’t want him to be an outside dog, but I almost don’t have a choice.

O_o
Okay first – he is ONLY 4 months old. He is still young and requires lots of patience in every regard.

Puppy pads? He probably tore them up because he knows he needs to eliminate outside! Why are you not giving him consistent potty breaks? You should be letting him outside every couple of hours and after every meal. When he does go potty outside you give him lots of verbal praise.
Funny you haven’t mentioned that you give him regular potty breaks as a solution yet – basic potty training technique.

Bell on a door? He’s not a seal and that is definitely not a technique you should be using when you haven’t even tried the basics yet.

Rubbing his nose/spanking/shouting – this doesn’t work because these are ridiculous methods in "correcting" your dog. Rubbing their nose in their mess is a myth – it does nothing, they have no idea what you’re trying to tell them. Shouting does nothing. Spanking does nothing except make them fearful of your hands and possibly turning them into a fear-based aggressive dog.
I am also willing to bet that you try to "discipline" your dog moments after the accident has happened. Dogs need to be told NO the moment it is happening. When you catch him in the act say very sternly (not shouting) NO and then bring him outside to finish up and give him praise when he does.

Why are you not giving this dog more chances to go outside and potty? He is clearly indicating to you that he would rather eliminate outside, so why aren’t you encouraging this?

If you are not willing to give your dog the basic time it needs (even for potty training), then the option is not to make him an outdoor dog – the option is to give him back to the breeder or bring him to a rescue. A 4 month old puppy does not deserve to be turned into an outdoor dog because its owners don’t have the time, patience or knowledge on how to raise him correctly.

How to train a labrador retriever ?

Patience and be consistent. I have a choc lab and I’ve worked at a vet for 11 years. The biggest problem is people are not consistent in training. You might want to buy a book called The Canine Good Citizen: Every Dog Can Be One by Jack Volhard, Wendy Volhard. Hope that helps.
