How do I train my Labrador?
My lab is 4 years old. He knows basic tricks, like sit and lay down, but i would love to train him to do stuff like roll over and bring a ball back when i throw it and drop it at my feet. I’ve tried using treats and cuddles but he just wont do anything i try and train him to do. he always has to have something in he’s mouth like a shoe or a toy but he doesn’t ever chew any shoes he just holds them in his mouth. Also I think he might have a really short attention span.

Many dogs carry things in their mouths, some have been taught to do it, others simply pick it up on their own. The short attention span is your dog simply turning you off because he has no idea what you want of him. Training correctly can be difficult, and worrying about being alpha or pack leader doesn’t help you train. I’ve posted some sites to give you an idea how to talk "dog" so your dog understands what you want him to do.
As a competition obedience trainer and handler, over the last several years, we’ve found treats work just fine, however you need to be consistent, don’t expect your dog to learn too fast, and train what you want him to learn in increments. If you try to teach too much, your dog will simply shut down and learn nothing. Here are some excellent training articles ;

Don’t worry about being a "pack leader"……it doesn’t help your dog learn anything other than it’s owner is a bully. Learn how to train and you and your dog will have a bond that’s unbelievable. Labs are extremely bright, but you need to learn how to train them
Ole is a Yellow Labrador Retriever that graduated from the Neuman K-9 Academy pet dog boot camp. This program covered obedience commands to sit, stay, down, heel, come when called, and general etiquette like waiting at doors until released and no jumping up. He also learned how to run on the treadmill, and jump in a vehicle on command.
