Labrador potty training help?
I recently purchased a 8 week old labrador. He is very smart and already responds to basic commands such as sit. But he seems to go toilet just about anywhere. I have a relatively large yard and he would need to walk about 50 metres to where I want him to releive himself. I always scoop it up ans show him where to go toilet but it doesnt seem to work. Sometimes he may do it where he is supposed to but majority of the time it is where ever he likes. Any ideas guys?
Oh and he also hates his leash and collar.
So he is going outside reliably, but just not where you want?
If that is the case, find the area you want him to go. Some people get sandboxes for free and teach their dog to go in there, but it is kind of like having a large litterbox and most people don’t fancy an outdoor litterbox.
Anyhow, take your dog there for potty time and let him sniff around. If he doesn’t go, try playing outside. Excercise helps to stimulate the bowels; when he does go there, give him an extra special treat. If he goes anywhere else in the yard, still praise him, but use something bland compared to what he gets if he goes in the area you chose.
EDIT: There is NO reason to smack a dog on the nose. They don’t understand what you want, so why punish them for a mistake that is understandable? And it isn’t going to make them think you are "the boss".
They’re just going to associate you with discomfort.
