Is it too late to start crating my dog 8 weeks after his arrival at my home?
My dog has been living with me for about 8 weeks, and he’s been living freely around my home (chewing things, pee-ing, jumping on people). He pretty much owns the house. I want to start crate training him, but I’m afraid that he’s gotten too used to his freedom and crate training won’t work. Is it still possible? if so what are the problems I might encounter? and how do I deal with them?
By the way my pup is a 13 month old Labrador.
It’s never too late to get a crate for your dog. We got our first crate a few months ago and our dogs are 2 years & 1 year, then adapted fine!
Coming from my experience, my dogs lived freely like yours, we decided to get a crate to put them in when we were out so they weren’t roaming the house. Now, though, it’s been converted into our car. What we did was put the crate on the floor with the doors open, not making a fuss and let them investigate themselves. When they went in, praise. The crate should always be a happy place for a dog to be, DON’T put your dog in there for punishment.
It’s really not that hard. Treats and toys were put in the crate for when we went out and praise was given when they were in. Within a matter of days my dogs knew the command "Crate" and ran in whenever it was said!
He’ll get used to the crate in no time, don’t worry.

WOW, you picked a wild one…..lol. Here’s a great site with articles that will help you cope.
It takes labs up to 3 years to mentally mature, and he is not too old to use a crate, nor to learn basic doggy manners;

It is never too late to crate train. I promote it. It isn’t cruel. they will come to think of it as their "safe haven". I suggest you put an old shirt or something that smells like you in the crate. Your pup will cry, but you need to be firm. It may take a few days for him to get used to it. I give my rescue/foster dogs a treat when I put them in their crate. They now know the routine. When I’m getting ready to go to work, they go in the crate by themselves, and sit, waiting for their treat. Crate training is also great for potty training. A dog will not potty where they sleep. Make sure the crate isn’t too big, or they will potty in it. Don’t leave food or water out 24/7, this doesn’t help with potty training. They need to potty 15 minutes after they eat. A pup of that age should be fed 3 times a day. Dint mean to preach, but get your pup ALL his vaccinations, de worm, and get on a heart worm preventative.

Its never too late to train a dog. but I suggest that rather than you crate train your dog, its better if you personally give it its basic and obedience training. Once trained, a dog would know what are your house rules and master’s orders are always followed at once. It might even be beneficial for you to train it as it can even help in some house chores by just allotting a portion of your time everyday to train it.
I recommend that you watch my 4 minute dog training video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncUgmH4HZh4 which will give you important tips to keep in mind as you train your dog.
The training is very easy and doesnt take too long as dogs are very fast learners plus being trained by their owners themselves builds their confidence as well as trust making them more enthusiastic about the training.
