Question about walking a labrador mix.?
Now I know that labs are extremely smart but they are also extremely bull headed. I need help on what to get to train her to walk. I got her about 3 days ago. The only thing she knows are sit, paw and get in the cage. She is also crate trained and doing really well on her potty training. I need to teach her to walk on a leash. She is on a choker chain right now but she doesnt care if she strangles herself on the thing. A guy told me his buddy who is a vet told him to get this choker chain that has spikes in it. He said his buddy said it doesnt hurt them but depending on how much they pull depends on how much it closes in with the spikes. My question is should I use one of these or something else? The harnesses look really cool to use but Im afraid even with a harness she will pull and I want her to learn to walk right next to me. Any advice from some owners that have dogs like this or did have dogs like this. Thanks
I dont expect to much right now because I just got her like 3 days ago. She is a really good dog. When she does good she gets alot of praise. My bf says quit doing that she cant understand you. I said she may not understand my words but she does understand the tone of my voice. But I guess we need to work on stay and heel before we work on the leash routine.
Its good that you have her sitting on command. Make sure you get her to "come" on command using a 6-foot lead, tugging lightly when you want her to come to you. Now have her "stay". Keep a 6-foot lead on her and back away slowly repeating the "stay" command. Once you have mastered that with her, move onto her sit/stay at your left side.Start to move and say "heel". If she starts to pull ahead of your hip, quickly snap the leash and sharply say "HEEL"!
As you are walking along, she will get better and better at this game. Labradors aren’t bull beaded, they’re just big dopes. They are devoted companions and will do anything you ask of them. All they ask of you is some playing with a stick or a tennis ball… and playing, always playing around.
Always, always, always give loads of praise when she does something right. Praise to the point of you looking ridiculous! That’s the best way to let her know she did a good job and that you are happy with her.
Once you have her heeling well, (after sh’s done her business) she’ll look really sharp in that harness and she’ll be the good friend you wanted when you brought her home. Remember, they’re puppies until they’re 2 years old.

I got a 12 week old utonagan puppy, i got her 3 days ago now and she is doing really well on the leash. If she stops or slows down i give her a tip bit to encourage her to walk on, but at first i walked her up and down the garden on a leash calling her name and that really really helped.

1)Try putting the choke chain at the top of her neck, behind the ears. That way you have more control over her.
2) Wait untill your dog is calm before you begin walking.
3)Before you leave, make sure you exit the house first, same as when you come back. You go in/out first then invite your dog to follow.
Also it helps if your calm and confident on your walk, that way the dog accepts you as its leader and follows you, rather than dragging you down the sidewalk.
I had the same problem with my dog, and after watching "The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" she listened like an angel, and still does.
