Dog Training Advice please?
Hi. I have a 15 week old Labrador puppy, and i just have a feeling I’m doing everything wrong. I feed her and take care of her, but she sometimes ignores me. It makes me really angry, and its starting to get very hard for me to control my anger. She knows how to sit and lay down, and she is almost potty trained. I was curious on how i could my dog to listen to me a little bit more. I understand that she is puppy and they have short attention spans, but i read that Labradors what to please you, but the fact that my dog ignores me does not please me. I was also wondering if any one could list the basic commands and how I train my dog to do them.
So to put it short, my questions are: How do i get my dog to stop ignoring me, and What are the basic commands and how do I train my dog to do them. Please answer.
How long have you had her? Are you sure she knows her name? One way to get her to stop ignoring you is to use treats. Sit near her and call her name, if she comes to you give her a treat, if not move a little closer and call her name. if she looks at you, give her a treat. She also might not have respect for you, you could try holding her on her back so her stomach is exposed for a few seconds at a time or until she holds still. Slowly increase the time she is on her back (it is a submissive gesture, it should make her easier to handle as she gets older). Come is one of the basic commands. Attach a long rope to her collar, say come and lightly tug on the leash, when/if she comes give her a treat and do it again, make sure to not push it too much, if she won’t do it after a few minutes you’ll get frustrated. If she won’t do it tell her to sit or lay down and give her a treat. Most importantly END ON A GOOD NOTE otherwise she’ll hate training and make it that much harder. Stay is also a good one but I don’t usually teach it so I don’t know much but you can attach a long leash to her collar, say sit or lay down and stay, hold your hand out, take a step back and if she stays say good girl and give her a treat, do the same thing again but take 2 steps back instead, reward the same way, slowly increase the distance, if she gets up say ah-ah(or your correction word) and back her up to the same place and start again but taking the same amount of steps back. In order to end on a good note you may have to decrease the distance a little.
hope this helped. The most important thing to remember when training is to have patience, she’ll get it eventually!!!
