Dog training plz answer my questions?
Hi I have a 7 month old labrador. I found a place where she can start training (I know it took me a while but couldn’t find the right place) for protection and obedience and socialization classes. The thing is this and I really need your opinion about all this.
The training is 5-6 weeks and she stays with the trainer no visits. Then after her training when I go and pick her up they teach me the comands. My dog will sleep in a kennel.
Now here are my questions:
Ps I don’t like the idea that’s she will be sleeping in a kennel she is my everything. She has never spent a night away from me.
Will training change her personality in a good or bad way?
Will she react the same way to me when I go and pick her up as she does now? I know this might sound stupid but I am scared that she won’t love me the way she does now. Or becomes a dog with no personality.
Is a kennel a bad or good thing and why?
What do you think about all this?
I know I am going to have her in my life for a long long time
makes me happy. But I want her to be more obedient. She is very important to me.
Pps she knows sit and stay this is more intense training, and they really do look after the dogs really
Thanks a lot
Really thank you for answering
I don’t think it’s too much to worry about. As long as you’re confident in your trainer and believe they will take good care of your furry child, i would give them away for a little while. When dogs are trained to be more obediant, they generally dont lose their instincts and personality. They wont start hating attention and pets just because they learn new things
. So, i think, as long as you’re comfortable with the trainer, its probably not a horible idea to put your dog through some training.

I would never send a dog away to be trained. I believe this should be between owner and pet.

After bootcamp they come back a much brighter dog but at first there almost a bit shy but when they settle back in there like new, except well trained. You shouldn’t be worried about your dog in a Kennel, They are well looked after, thats just like their bedroom.

Why can’t you train her again? I don’t trust anyone other than family with my dog…the only way he would be spending the night some where is if it was at the vet and it was absolutely necessary. I got my dog when I was 13, my first dog and I was heavily involved in his training. No professionals, just me and my dad and he turned out great. So don’t think you can’t do it. It just requires patience and time, and you’re bonding with your dog while training him/her. If you can get a trainer to come to your house or meet at a park to help you if you don’t feel confident in doing it alone but I would NEVER send my dog away. I had friends do the send away and their dog didn’t learn anything hah

Personal Experience
I don’t think you should send her away, she needs to be trained by you so she can respect you and know that you are the boss. Also you don’t have to make her sleep in a kennel but remember not to spoil her to much. Its hard to resist that cute face but she will be harder to train if you always let her get what she wants

she will still love you and probably really excited when you go to pick her up since you haven’t seen her in awhile. if they allow you bring her favorite toy or bed to stay with her for the training process so she will have your scent with her. staying in a kennel is fine as long it is big enough, she should be able walk around but if it’s too huge she will be scared. make sure that in the kennel she has a bed or atleast a blanket something soft to lay down and that they take her out on regular walks with time to run around. she will still have a personailty she will just respect you. my friends dog is the most obedient dog I have met but a huge love bug and loves to play and be pet he is a lab too. so if this place is clean and relaible i wouldnt worry! if you decided you don’t want this anymore you can always go to obedience classes where you don’t have to leave her!

It is a very bad idea to train a Labrador for protection. They do not have the natural instincts for it, which means to drag out the behaviors they are looking for, the training will most likely be very traumatizing for the dog and use methods bordering on cruelty. Labs are retrievers. They were bred to be social, soft-mouthed, and obedient- NOT to protect in any way shape or form. You will most likely ruin her good temperament trying to do this.
I would not send a dog away to a trainer either. A good trainer trains you and the dog at the same time so that you can see every step of the process and the dog learns to respect YOU, not the trainer. There is no point in sending a dog away for training.
She may adapt to kennel sleeping, but it will be stressful for her to change her routine so abruptly.
This sounds like a terrible idea, seriously. This situation will absolutely change her personality very drastically and you will not like the results. Find a trainer that will work with you and her together, and forget about the protection idea altogether. Only a frightened, defensive, stressed and unbalanced Lab would ever be able to achieve any sort of "protection" behaviors, and at the expense of her happiness and sanity.

I would NOT ever do that.
1. Both. Good: behave better Bad: Training = no fun accept treats
2. Yes. She will be overjoyed when she goes back to her real mommy/daddy.
3. She will still love you.
4. A dog being trained is not becoming no personality, but becoming a dog with a bigger personality due to experience, and well behaved.
5. A kennel is both to different people. Me? Sleeping in a kennel is both. She will want to sleep in there. She will grow to like it. I personally like my dogs in the bed. Bad: She is restrained.
Why I would not go there:
1.Labs are VERY easy to train.
2. Protection is just a horse field. You may not have one. I understand. or a fenced in back yard.
3. Obedience is easy. If you can teach your own dog to sit, you can teach her anything.
4. Socialization is just letting her sniff your family, and friends. Most dogs like people. Especially labs.
5.5-6 weeks without seeing my dog?!?! RIIIGHT! Never!
6. They might just follow the commands of the trainer, you know.
7. My dog will never sleep in a kennel. He will sleep where he pleases.
8. He would be depressed for about a week. My dog has never spent a night away from me either.
9. I would be scared too. It is okay.
10. I would be depressed 5-6 weeks…

Dreamer hit the nail right on the head. This is a terrible idea. Labradors are not meant to be protection dogs. They are not a guarding breed.

Please don’t send her away for training, none of the trainers care about the dogs that they are paid to train. There is no magical way to train dogs and she could be traumatised if you leave her.
Instead, take her to training classes where you will be taught how to train her. You will make mistakes and your first dog will never win accolades. Nevertheless there is no way that you can trust anyone to care for your dog and she could be abused.
I wish that you were in the UK and lived near to me, I would love to help you.
