Puppy Training ?
I have just got a wonderful Labrador puppy. He is so playful and gentle, but we are having difficulty housetraining him. Can anyone give me tips or suggestions on how to houstrain him ?? We already take him out every hour or so, but he will wait untill he comes back into the house before he does the toilet.
Any tips or suggestions would be very much appreciated !!
Thank You !!
Then you’re just not waiting long enough. How old is he? I’m assuming if you just got him that he’s only around 9 weeks. Puppies that age have no bladder control so when he’s got to go, it’s right now. Take him out, stay out with him, tell him "go pee" and the split second he does, give him a ton of praise, then come right back in.
In the house, you need to keep him in the room with you so you can watch him every second and take him out like you’re doing now – every hour or if he shows any signs of restlessness (or after a nap, hard playing, or a long drink). When you can’t watch him, you need to crate train him.
The idea is to not let him have an accident, but to praise for doing it correctly. When he does have an accident, just quietly clean it up. If you scold him, you’ll only teach him to fear you and try to hide it next time.
In the beginning, house training a puppy means 100% vigilance on your part. A lot of people will tether the puppy to them with a leash to keep the puppy close. It’s a lot of hard work for you in the beginning, but it pays off, because it’s pretty quick housetraining a puppy the correct way.

You need to take him to the same little area each time. Don’t talk to him or play with him when you have him out for this trip. He will soon sniff around and go. If he waits until you take him back in, you aren’t keeping him out long enough. Take him out shortly after he eats or drinks. Praise him, praise him, praise him when he does go.

Right off the bat I can see a mistake you’re making. You HAVE to be out there with the pup. First of all puppies get so easily distracted. Squirrels, birds, the kid up the block, leaves blowing across the ground…they tend to forget they even need to go until they come back inside and all the outdoor distractions are gone. PLUS if you aren’t there, you can’t give a command potty OR praise/reward the pup for getting it right and you don’t even know that the dog DID go outside. In all training it’s not enough to teach what you don’t want, you need to also teach what you do want. SO to speed things along and communicate more clearly to the pup, you will go out with the pup every time, reward for getting it right, and keep yard time to potty only for now. It will go a long way in helping the pup understand outdoors is for potty first and foremost always.

P.S. Be vigilent and consistent. IF they pup starts to squat inside that is when you scoop them up immediately and take them out the door! You have to supervise like a hawk, but the more often you catch them the faster they can learn. Be patient, it won’t happen in a week. HTH

I found a cool site that actually gives you free dog training videos. Go to http://www.usfreeads.com/1146948-cls.html
and the first one reviewed there has free videos that you can watch from a top dog trainer that also specializes in puppies.
